Indomitable Lions of Cameroon Breaks a 37-Year Hiatus, Winning Back-to-Back the Top Soccer Prize On the African Continent, in a Tournament That Rarely Lived Up to Its Billing
Irresistible. Invincible, at least on the African Continent. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon deservedly won the 23rd edition of the African Nations Cup, defeating the Senegal`s Lions of Teranga after a heart-stopping penalty shoot-out.
Senegal, the underdog, began the match on a bright note but had to admit being second best for the greater part of the game before bowing 2-3 on penalties, making the Cameroonians the first nation since Ghana in 1965, to successfully defend the trophy. For the first three minutes, the Senegalese looked good, almost taking a shock lead against their more accomplished opponents.
The Senegalese midfield contrived a glorious chance, fluffed by Henri Camara, against a team that did not concede any goal in the entire tournament. Camara punted his shot over the bar after the bleach blond star striker, El-Hadji Diouf had outpaced the Cameroonian defence, flicking a dainty back-heel into the path of Camara outside the six-yard box.
That move emboldened the Senegalese who must have felt that they had a decent chance of devouring the Indomitable Lions. 16 minutes later, Camara, again, forced another save from the Cameroonian keeper, Bonker Alioum. This time, Camara got his effort on target after breaking free of the Cameroonian defence.
However, the Cameroonians did not quickly settle and they appeared to be missing the services of their hitman, Patrick Mboma, who was out with a foot injury. They must have derived comfort from the presence of Coach Winfried Schafer on the sideline after an earlier touchline ban imposed on him was lifted.
Cameroon made their first statement of intent in the 22nd minute, when a dangerous free kick swung in by Geremi Nyitap beat the Senegalese keeper, Tony Sylva and Cameroonian Marc Vivien Foe narrowly missed connection with a header into what was an inviting net. The champions surged forward and almost made amends a minute later.
A promising run by Sameul Eto`o from the right tore the Senegalese defence apart. Eto`o capped it with an excellent cross but Ndiefi - Mboma`s replacement - served up a dog`s dinner of a finish with that a shot wide off the goal.
Moments later, Senegal almost made Cameroon pay for their profligacy. A venomous long range drive by Diouf fizzed just wide. On the other side, the game became more exciting, Eto`o, looking more lively, forced Sylva into a fine save. Ndiefi also went close, missing the decisive touch after another quick surge by the improving Cameroonians Three minutes from halftime, a powerful upfield surge by Geremi gave Ndiefi a shooting chance. From a right angle, the striker shot wide having ignored better positioned team mates. He was later ruled offside.
The Cameroonians managed to hit the net after Eto`o headed in a long throw from Geremi. The goal was, however, disallowed because the refree adjudged Ndiefi as having shoved the Senegalese keeper. A huge let-off for the Senegalese. But it was a brief one. Seconds later, Sylva was again forced to make a save from the feet of the surging Eto`o.

/> The second half began with both sides adopting a more cautious approach. Nothing of note took place in the first 10 minutes and it involved the ceaseless running of the tank-like Ndiefi, who forced Sylva off his line for a save.
Then Senegalese fashioned a riposte through a powerful surge by Coly into penalty box. Coly was, however, stopped by some gritty defending. Then the cards started flying; Cameroon`s Tchato (for a deliberate handball) and Eto`o (for a wild lunge) this in addition to the one bagged earlier by Vivien Foe. But the game just kept fizzing with quality excitement.
In the 15th minute of the second half, a fluid Cameroonian movement involving about six players put Ndiefi in the box with a chance but the Senegalese defence bundled the ball away for a corner kick. The resultant corner, swung in by Geremi, gave Raymond Kalla a header which was well saved by Syla! Kalla had to leave the pitch, momentarily, on account of being hit when he went up for the header.
Later, Ndiefi`s tireless run put him in the clear. With only the goalkeeper to beat, the stocky striker hit the post, to the relief of the Senegalese.
The Cameroonians had moved into another gear, with their feet firmly on the gas pedal. Senegal pulled more players back to cope with the rampant Indomitable Lions. The first yellow card for the Senegalese duly arrived while under siege. Henri Camara, in a deep position - a testimony to the pressure against them - lunged at Eto`o, and the referee promptly flashed him a yellow. Senegal, again, surged forward but were shut out by Rigobert Song as the game went into extra-time.
The tide did not change in the extra time. Cameroon continued to dominate. Ndiefi, again, missed another chance, nodding wide from a sweet cross by Solomon Olembe.
Ndiefi was later replaced by Patrick Suffo. Senegal quickly fought back; Henri Camara`s superb run was marred by a poorly delivered cross. Cameroun seized the initiative once more, probing the Senegalese and hoping the dam would soon break. No such thing happened as the first half of the extra time arrived.
At the beginning of the last 15 minutes, Senegal appeared to have recharged their batteries. Diouf continued to threaten with imaginative plays and almost put substitute Souleymane Camara in the clear. Still no goal. The game was approaching its ambers and the grim but fascinating lottery of penalty shoot-out appeared the most likely option in deciding the winner. That almost got wiped off when Suffo, in the last seconds, forced Sylva off his line to prevent what might have been a last gasp winner for the Indomitable Lions. Then the penalties and the drama.
Sylva saved to deny Pierre Wome and gave Senegal a cushion. Coly`s kick trickled into the net from a near save by Alioun Bonkar. Suffo and Lauren scored for Cameroon while Fadiga did the same for Senegal.
Then the table turned; Senegalese substitute, Faye`s kick was saved by Bonker. Geremi scored for Cameroon and Diouf put his kick wide. Cameroonian skipper, Song was also kept out by Sylva before his Senegalese counterpart, Alion Cisse, played his kick straight at Alioun, to send the Indomitable Lions into the tribe of four-time winners - alongside Ghana and Egypt.
