CAN: Cameroon to Face Côte d`Ivoire at Quarter Finals (30.01.2006)
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon yesterday beat the Simbas of DR Congo, 2 — 0, to top Group B.
Three matches. Three victories. This eloquent performance was enough to propel the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to the summit of Group B at the ongoing 25th African Cup of Nations. Since the start of the tournament last January 20, the Lions have remained invincible; 3 — 1 against Angola in the first outing, 2 — 0 against Togo in the second match and 2 — 0 yesterday against DR Congo in their last group match. With nine points, the Lions finished first in Group B and would face Cote d`Ivoire, the second placed team of Group A in the quarter finals. Despite the defeat of yesterday, DR Congo qualified for the knock out stage on goal difference, claiming second place. World Cup finalists, Angola and Togo, are out of the competition as they occupy the third and fourth places respectively and.
With very little at stake for Cameroon, yesterday`s match was an opportunity for Coach Artur Jorge to try his reserve bench. Besides Captain Song, Eto`o, Njitap and Alioum, the rest of the players were featuring in the first 11 for the first time since the start of the tournament. The team, however, put up a good performance with goalkeeper Kameni Carlos keeping his net intact.
Yesterday`s encounter, which was watched by
the Egyptian national team, started off slowly but gathered steam at the 31st minute when Geremi Njitap drove home the curtain raiser with a spectacular long-range strike. Two minutes later, Eto`o Fils netted Cameroon`s second goal; his fifth in the tournament. Meyong Ze failed to sink the Simbas at the 37th minute as he missed a well directed header. Cameroon continued to lead, 2 — 0, when both teams separated for half time.
The second half started with Claude Le Roy making a few changes in his squad. This however failed to give the desired results as the Simbas excelled in untargeted passes and poorly directed kicks at the goal. Not even the resort to foul play, which earned striker, Matingou Frank, a red card, could grant a goal to the Simbas. The game ended with Cameroon outplaying DR Congo, 2 -0.
Cameroon`s quarter final match against Cote d`Ivoire will take place next Saturday at the Cairo Military stadium. Captain Song and his mates have five days to prepare for the encounter. If the serenity, cohesion and discipline that presently reigns in the group continues, there is no doubt that Cameroon will move to the semis with ease. After all, the Lions are today the most dreaded squad in the tournament, with onlookers unanimous that Cameroon remains Africa`s number one despite failing to qualify for the World Cup.
