A Memorable Farewell (08.07.2003)
Hundreds throng the Yaounde " Notre Dame " Cathedral to say " adieu " to a fallen hero.
Life in Yaounde came to a standstill yesterday for one simple reason: the nation in its entirety was paying homage to Cameroon’s fallen hero Marc Vivien Foe with a solemn mass at the "Notre Dame Des Victoires" Cathedral.
The Cathedral proved too small to contain the hundreds of Cameroonians and foreigners who answered present to condole and pay their final tribute to Cameroon’s midfield maestro. Many others converged at its precincts to follow the homily minute by minute through loudspeakers placed at appropriate locations.
The more than two-hour event kicked-off at exactly 11 a.m. with the entry of President Paul Biya and wife Chantal Biya; they then paid homage before the coffin containing the mortal remains of Marc Vivien Foe. The magnitude and doleful nature of the ceremony was not only epitomised by the Presidential Couple, but by the whole cream of government ministers, politicians, diplomats… etc. Clad mostly in black (a sign of mourning) team mates of the Indomitable Lions wore grim faces, and occasionally, some removed handkerchiefs to contain tears.
The officiating prelate Jerome Owono Mimboe (Bishop of Obala) with more than 40 priests and bishops paid glowing tribute to Foe for his altruistic characteristics and God-fearing demeanour. In his homily, the Diocesan Administrator of the Archdiocese of Yaounde Joseph Akonga Essomba harped on the victory of life over death.

/> He said the nation was mobilised for Foe because he was a symbol of hardwork and perseverance (both for the old and young). "He was a faithful Christian who devoted his life to God," he said, adding : "The death of a young man is a premature event. But, we should not forget that death is unavoidable and the young could even be more spiritually mature than people aged 60". The Diocesan Administrator laid emphasis on Foe’s humanitarian qualities and gestures. He delved on Foe’s love for the poor, how he was a Good Samaritan in a world where most people are egoistic and egocentric. The name "Foe", he revealed, means "message" in Ewondo.
Reason why, he noted, Foe’s death is a message for the youths to do the best in all their endeavours. "Even if you are a street cleaner, do your optimum so that your name remains indelible in the annals of history," he emphasised.
Let us learn to share, he entreated "for this is the best way to emulate Foe".
As expected, a message read on behalf of the Catholic Bishops of Cameroon, expressed shock and disbelief, but noted that God loved Foe best, that’s why He has called him to His Kingdom. The bishops equally prayed for God to console the bereaved family. Testimonies from the Indomitable Lions captain Rigobert Song Bahanag, Iya Mohamed (President of the Cameroon Football Federation), Issa Hayatou (President of CAF), Sepp Blatter (FIFA president)… praised Foe for not only making Cameroon proud (through his football skills and exemplary qualities), but being a model for generations to come.
