Interpools 2005 : Surprises (12.12.2005)
Federal, Mount Cameroun, Impôt s FC and Union Douala will play in the elite league next season.
The 2005 edition of the round robin tournament, dubbed Interpools, ended yesterday. The competition was hard as the stakes were high. Unlike in the past where just the ten provincial representatives took part in the Interpools, two Division I teams at the verge of relegation also contested for the four available tickets. After two weeks of intense competition in Buea and Douala, newcomers, Impôt of Yaounde; opportunists, Federal of Noun and incumbents Union of Douala and Mount Cameroon, grabbed their tickets for the prestigious elite football league.
Federal of Noun, which finished top in Pool A with 10 points, can be considered the greatest achievers judging from the fact that the team did not qualify for the tournament on the pitch. The club was eliminated at the semi-finals in the West provincial mini-Interpools. It was latter designated by the Cameroon Football Federation to represent the West province at the annual round robin tournament after Lac Baleng and Banja FC, the finalists, were disqualified for corruption.
The case of Federal aside, the verdict of the 2005 edition of the Interpools can be considered as a consecration of hard work and experience over improvisation and naivety. No one can doubt the quality of preparation put in by Impôt; a club owned by the department of Taxation. Their first attempt was the master’s try for the young team that had several training camps and was even subjected to a solemn goodbye ceremony organised by its fans and managers. It is therefore not surprising that the Yaounde based team impressed spectators at the Buea Molyko stadium and topped Pool B with 11 points. Impôt can be rightly considered the revelation of the
season. Besides gaining admission into Division I, the club has also qualified for the final of the Cup of Cameroon.
Union and Mount Cameroon, which played in Division I this season, had no other option but to fight to stay in the elite league. Like good repeaters, the teams succeeded to staying afloat. They fought to stay in Division I to the last minute. Union finished second in Pool B alongside AS Douala II, but gained its admission into Division I thanks to the head-to-head advantage over AS Douala II. Union had won their group game 1-0. on the other hand, Mount Cameroon was the first team to qualify in Pool A. By winning its first three matches, the Buea-based team demonstrated that its place is in the elite league. Although it lost its last match yesterday, the team finished with ten points and were also separated from group leaders, Federal, by head to head advantage.
Kumba Lakers, remain the greatest losers in Pool A. The 4-0 win of the K-town boys yesterday was not good enough to propel the team into Division I as it finished third with nine points. Meanwhile North West representatives, Young Sports Academy, have but themselves to blame. The team is reaping the fruits of inexperience. It started the competition well with a 4 - 0 victory over Renaissance Meiganga but failed to maintain the steam and flopped into oblivion from the second playing day.
Despite personality conflicts that delayed the start of the competition in Pool A, despite protests on the fielding of unqualified players by some teams, despite problems linked to the late arrival of tickets at the stadium in Molyko on certain match days, despite the low turn out for certain matches and the absence of football agents to fish out budding talents, Interpools 2005 has been a successful tournament.
