The first phase of the 25th African Cup of Nations underway in Egypt has seen the re-establishment of the continent`s football chart disrupted during the recent joint qualifiers of the present African Cup of Nations and World Cup in Germany. With 24 of the 32 matches programmed for the tournament already played, speculations as to who can do what, have given way to more realistic analysis. Egypt, Cote d`Ivoire, Cameroon, DR Congo, Guinea, Tunisia …. have made it to the second round.
If these results reflect the eventual potentials, then Africa is in for trouble at the World Cup in Germany. The five World Cup finalists failed to make a difference. Their performances have been bellow expectation. Coaches of other World Cup finalists, who flooded Egypt to see Togo, Angola, Tunisia, Ghana and Cote d`Ivoire play, certainly have very little to write home about. Tunisia, the reigning African champions, succeeded with a lot of strain to have a seat in the group of eight. The Carthage Eagles were humiliated by a 3-0 defeat against Zambia last Monday. Cote d`Ivoire has also qualified for the knock out stage. The Elephants, who would face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at the quarter finals next Saturday, were thrashed 1 - 3 in the last group match against Egypt.
Cameroon and Guinea have the best attack and defence in the first round, with
both teams scoring seven goals in three matches and bagging home just one each. Egypt also reassured their fans after finishing first in Group A. The Pharaohs think nothing can stop them from grabbing the trophy.
The first round also had its share of victims. For health or disciplinary reasons, some players have already been ruled out of the competition. Kalla of Cameroon has at least 15 days to recover from the muscle tear he had during the match against Togo. Ghana midfielder, Laryea Kingston and Senegal’s defender, Habib Beye have been given four-match bans following their dispute last Friday. These are the most severe sanctions in the history of Nations Cup.
Meanwhile, Fifa`s security adviser in Egypt has warned that a "tragedy" could happen at the Cairo International stadium if nothing is done to stop overcrowding. The irony is that while spectators flood Egypt`s matches at the Cairo International stadium, the other venues of the competition, notably the Cairo Military stadium, remain scanty. Not even the Egyptian soldiers, bussed in on match days, have succeeded to fill the empty seats.
The knock out stage that begins on Friday promises to produce fireworks. All eight contenders are bent on offering the trophy to their fans, wherefore the serenity and discipline that presently reigns within the various squads.
