Are you satisfied with Cameroon’s performance so far?
Not at all. It is true that compared to Manchester 2002, the number of medals here are dwindling, perhaps due to the absence of effective preparations. At the personal level, I am happy with my performance so far. Frankly, I was not so hot about coming for these Games. Thanks to the persuasion of some persons, I am here after a last minute decision. On arrival, I geared myself for a mere sports event, but when the final came within sight the sensation of a challenging competition spread all over me. My slot for the 100 metres final was not a good one, but I reminded myself that in a major competition in 2003, a gold medallist emerged from that position. I therefore concentrated fully to lift the bronze medal.
What is your impression about the output of athletes in other disciplines?
I think they tried to give their best although the absence of experience did not work to their
favour. Weightlifting and boxing for instance have young teams and in the next four years or so, their potential will find maximum expression.
What is your reading of the future?
From my point of view, we have budding talents with inherent potentials in most individual sports disciplines. A lot has to be done in the area of training and preparations if these potentials have to blossom. Without appropriate preparation, we cannot expect miracles. I have the opportunity of staying in Lille (France) and training in a sports structure. But, without any scholarship I have to work and train at the same time. Sometimes I forgo training stints to work so I can settle my bills. At the moment I have arrears of rents due to the simple reason that I have no assistance from any sports structure at home. I think that all stakeholders— Federations, Olympic Committee and Public Authorities — have to put into place appropriate strategies to groom and support our sports talents if they are interested in medals.
