Lions pinned down by Algeria (26.01.2004)

The Algeria team fought back strongly to equalise and force Cameroon to a one all draw in their opening game in the Nations Cup in Sousse.
Patrick Mboma put an end to detractors with an excellent goal, headed in at the 44th minute. The curtain raiser was the fruit of several minutes of domination by the Indomitable Lions.
Geremi Njitap who crossed in for Mboma had been brilliant at the right wing as Cameroon moved up to capture more territory.
Unfortunately for Cameroon, only seven minutes after resumption, substitute Brahim Zafour erased the advantage when he fired in a rebound of a poorly cleared corner kick.
Though Cameroon did not take all the three points, they proved tough and ready to fight to retain the title. Algeria took control of the game in the first15 minutes, before losing the rest of it to Cameroon.
The Lions succeeded to impose their game on the Algerian, who as usual were very fast. The only regret was that more goals did not come to crown their efforts. Samuel Eto’o missed two clear chances in the first half, before Mboma’s hit the woodwork with another excellent header in the second half. While Geremi Njitap had several of his shoots at goal deflected by the last defender as the minutes ebbed away.
The draw was in deed a great achievement for the Algerian who have lost all four previous Nations Cup games to Cameroon. The over 3000 Algerian fans who simply crossed the border to watch the match had a huge celebration when it all ended. For
them it was great victory, though coach Rabah Saabane tried to play the success down.

I am glad with the performance of the group, though we did not win. My own performance comes second. I scored a goal, but I had other chances of scoring more goals which I lost.
We don’t have to get worried about the draw. We were not bad at all.
However, we have to treat the next two games in a way we would not have done if we defeated Algeria. That means more pressure for us. Good enough we are used to the pressure.

I am personally not disappointed we my performance. We had an excellent game. The Algerians did not surprise us at all. Even though we dominated, we could not have the goals. That’s African football. Every team is a big team. They equalised at the right moment.
We’ll maintain our game, hoping that next time we’ll take all three points and look ahead.

I do not consider the draw as a defeat because one point is still something. The Algerians are a good side and they prepared very well to face us. What we have to do next is to keep our morale high. We are strong enough to continue, after correcting our mistakes.

I think our main error was that we did not finish up most of our chances. We have to correct this error to move ahead. The draw will also motivate us to work harder. In order to win the other games we must score goals.
