FECAFOOT launches nation-wide reforms explanation tour (22.05.2003)

After voting reforms that will touch the national league and the interpools competitions, national FECAFOOT officials have started a nation-wide tour to explain how the reforms will be executed.
The first port of call for the officials was Douala last Friday. It was a meeting with provincial football authorities, club owners and managers and the press.
FECAFOOT secretary general Jean Rene Atangana Mballa went into the genesis of the reforms, why it was badly needed and the expected result of stabilising the clubs.
Basically as from next year, division one clubs will number 18, divided into two groups of eight each. The last team in each group will be relegated, while the first four from each group will go ahead to play a Supper league. The remaining eight will battle not to fall in the last two places for relegation.
FECAFOOT officials expect that this new format will bring back the crowd into the stadiums as clubs will provide enough spectacle by permanently fighting either for the title, continental places or against relegation. Consequently, sponsors will also come in with enough money to help the clubs.
Atangana Mballa disclosed that if the resources of FECAFOOT increased then like CAF or UEFA, it will pay clubs bonuses for match won.
As some Littoral provincial football stakeholders became worried about the change of rules in the middle of the season as concerned the interpools, Atangana Mballa reassured them that there was no need to panic because safety measures had been taken.
He explained that only one team will
represent a province henceforth, with four of them qualifying for division one as against 3 in the past.
“If we don’t make this changes now, then we can not start applying the reforms next season”, Atangana said.
The meeting which also aimed at making known the operation and functions of all FECAFOOT structures, offered Atangana the opportunity to talk about the protection of young footballers, the giving of subsidies to clubs, youth and feminine football and the promulgation of a statute for referees and coaches.
The secretary general of Littoral FECAFOOT, Mbappe Essoka also talked about how the provincial league was managed. He took questions from journalists on certain problems like the promotion of clubs and referees into division two.
The problem plaguing the functioning of the four divisional leagues in the provinces were brought to the floor by the president of each league. The problems concerned lack of infrastructure and money.
Club officials were urged to protect the ages of players and never hesitate to channel their problems to league managers.
The meeting was chaired by Littoral’s vice president Tombi A. Roko who said he was glad that FECAFOOT’s ‘new communication policy was launched in my province’ Tombi also called upon FECAFOOT president Iya Mohamed to launch his campaign for re-election, “which we support,” in Douala. That campaign is a year away.
Also present in the meeting were national vice presidents Charles Emedec and David Mayebi and assistant treasurer, Moise Djombi Doff. The communication policy in dubbed ‘a window on the provinces’.
