LAGOS,
Nigerian forward Daniel Amokachi is in line for a return to the national team for the African Nations Cup, said Nigeria assistant coach Joe Erico Saturday.
"He (Amokachi) is one of the players selected for our Nations Cup preparations and if he can prove that he is now 100 per cent fit, there is no reason why he should not be at the Nations Cup," said Erico.
Nigeria plan to invite 38 players to kick off preparations for the Nations Cup on December 28 in the southern town of Abeokuta.
Amokachi, who was recently linked with a transfer to
the Major League Soccer in the United States, last starred for the `Super Eagles` at the 1998 World Cup in France.
A lingering knee injury, which needed two operations in Europe and left the 27-year-old struggling to return to the Nigeria set-up, has raised serious doubts about the future of the all-action forward .
Last December, he was dropped from the final 22-man squad for the 2000 Nations Cup hosted by Ghana and Nigeria. He was again axed from the crunch World Cup game in Sudan after national team selectors ruled him unfit.
