Hero Holland thrilled with Ireland start (01.06.2002)
Republic of Ireland midfielder Matt Holland could not hide his delight after netting a superb goal to earn his side a point in their opening World Cup match against Cameroon.
"We had a lot of chances in the second half but couldn`t quite get the winner. Still it`s a great result for us," explained the Ipswich Town captain.
Patrick Mboma gave Cameroon a deserved half-time lead when he stroked the ball into an empty net after some superb approach play from Samuel Eto`o in the 39th minute.
But the Irish came out fighting in the second half and Holland crashed home an equaliser from 25-yards in the 52nd minute.
"The ball just game to me and I managed to hit it well," recalled Holland. "I scored a couple of goals like that in the qualifying campaign, so to do it in the finals as well is great.
"It was crucial not to lose today. Now we`ve got two matches left to try to qualify," he continued. "There were some great performances from our boys all over the pitch. It was a hot day and it was hard work, but we`re pleased."
Ireland captain Steve Staunton, meanwhile, admitted that he was disappointed to finish with just one point. "In the first half we were at sixes and sevens yet still had a couple of chances. We feel very unfortunate not to come away with a win," he said.
"We paid them too much respect in
the first half, and in the second half we went at them, we put them on the back foot and I feel for the Irish lads because we deserved three points.
"We had great support from the fans but that`s nothing less than we expect, some of them came from half way around the world. We showed our character although I can`t believe that our charatcer was ever in question.
"That`s a disgrace for people to do that because one thing we always had was character," insisted Staunton. "There`s still a lot of football to be played. It`s a good result but on the back of our second half performance we`re disappointed not to win."
Ireland midfielder Mark Kinsella explained that coach Mick McCarthy`s half-time team talk helped the team to turn the game round in the second period.
"We showed Cameroon too much respect in the first half, they had a lot of the ball and we didn`t put them under early pressure," he said. "We went a goal down and Mick McCarthy said a few words to us at half-time, and then we were a different side.
"We will look ahead to Germany now and it should be more of the same against them. We want to win every game and finish top of the group. Matt Holland had a great game, he is always dangerous outside the box," added the Charlton Athletic star.
Germany take on Saudi Arabia in Group E`s second match later on Saturday.
