Barca turns on the spectacle (4-1) (24.09.2004)
FC Barcelona bounced back from a goal down to sweep aside Zaragoza in yet another fine performance in the Nou Camp on Thursday evening and go level with Valencia at the top of the table.
Frank Rijkaard`s players overcame the triple blow of losing both full backs to injury in the opening minutes plus an early goal from Villa to hit back with two goals from Eto`o and one apiece from Xavi and `Gio`. The avalanche of attacking football in the second half was spectacular.
Early injury blow
True to his word, Rijkaard rotated his squad and included Sylvinho and Gabri in the starting line-up. However, the Brazilian left back felt a twinge in his right knee and asked to be subbed after only three minutes, being replaced by Van Bronckhorst. Just five minutes later, right back Gabri went down with what looked like a serious knee injury and was replaced by Belletti, bringing Rijkaard`s philosophy of squad rotation back to square one.
In the 11th minute, Giuly came close to surprising Luis GarcÃa in the Zaragoza goal with a lobbed shot that went just wide. The visitors then took advantage of a misplaced pass from Eto`o and Villa fired in from outside the area (0-1).
Equalizer from Eto`o
Barca continued to press and in the 22nd minute Gio fired off a long range effort that the visiting goalkeeper did well to clear. Three minutes later it was Xavi`s turn to try his fortune. In the 26th minute, Eto`o atoned for
hispart in Zaragoza`s goal with a dazzling run in from the left of the Barca attack, passing several opponents and finishing off with a spectacular right-footed shot which flew into the net (1-1). Barca continued to push the ball around but Zaragoza defended in an orderly fashion. Barca went in at half time level on goals but with the promise of much more to come.
Eto`o makes it a brace
The 74,000 fans barely had time to get back to their seats when Eto`o got his second of the night. Ronaldinho took a long pass from Puyol, controlled it with one deft touch and fired it low to the Cameroon striker who took his chance almost on the goal line(1-2).
The Barca players were beginning to enjoy themselves and play rapid, ambitious and effective attacking football as the Zaragoza players crumbled under the onslaught.
Xavi and Gio finish off the visitors
In the 66th minute, Xavi celebrated his 250th appearance with another long range effort that cannoned in off the underside of the bar with Luis GarcÃa completely beaten. Seven minutes later, Van Bronckhorst made it four after a brilliant pass from Ronaldinho.
And it could have been more. Eto`o slipped with only Luis GarcÃa to beat while Ronaldinho hit the outside of the post after a superb 50-yard run which took him round the Zaragoza keeper. Giuly saw his late shot pushed round the post for a corner. Another night to remember for the Barca fans, Mexican wave included!
