Mbah a Moute far from home but joyful (04.04.2006)

INDIANAPOLIS — These games are such a joy to UCLA freshman Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, a 19-year-old from the African nation of Cameroon who is emerging as one of college basketball`s biggest stars.
He loves the competition, the passion.
He loves the UCLA fans and is particularly getting a kick out of the ones wearing the "Cameroon Crazies" T-shirts.
"You look up and see people cheering your name, or waving a flag from your country, it makes you feel good," he says. "It makes you realize you`re doing something special."
After the games, though, there is sometimes not so much joy. His teammates, and his opponents, greet their families with smiles and hugs, maybe some tears. These moments are tough for Mbah a Moute, because his family will be on another continent Monday night when he tries to help bring UCLA the NCAA championship.
"That`s hard," he says. "You see everybody else having family in the stands. You want to have your family, too.
"But I made a commitment to my team. They`re all family to me. So, to me, I have my family on the court."
He also has a lot of admirers, because of the smart, determined, skillful way he is performing on college basketball`s biggest stage.
He`s only been playing the sport five years, but college basketball fans everywhere are learning all about his name (luke ri-SHARD umbah-a-moo-teh) and his game (it`s very good and getting better daily).
He`s where he wants to be, but the separation from his parents, five brothers and three sisters, and his country, has been difficult.
He left Cameroon, where his father is a tribal chief of a village outside of the capital city of Yaounde, three years ago to enroll at Montverde Academy, a prep school in Florida, with the goal of getting to college on a
basketball scholarship.
"Leaving my family was very, very emotional," he says. "When it was time to leave, it was very hard for me. But that`s what a man has to do."
The last time he saw his father was last summer, when his dad and two of his brothers came from Cameroon to see him graduate from Montverde. Then his mother came to help him get settled at UCLA last fall.
His parents have never seen him play basketball in America.
Mbah a Moute says some of the NCAA Tournament games are available in Cameroon on taped replays. He`s not sure who`s watching or when.
He talks to his parents on the phone every 10 days or so. He keeps up with friends and brothers and sisters online.
Soccer is the dominant sport in Cameroon, and Mbah a Moute says he and fellow Cameroonian and UCLA freshman Alfred Aboya are trying to help build basketball`s status.
"We`re like role models," he says. "People are looking up to us."
Certainly a young player in Cameroon — or Cleveland, for that matter — could learn a lot from watching Mbah a Moute play. The 6-7, 224-pounder is a natural rebounder, a tireless defender and has a soft shooting touch. His best game might have been his most recent. He outplayed LSU`s third-team All-American, 310-pound Glen "Big Baby" Davis, outscoring him 17-14 and outrebounding him 9-7 in UCLA`s 59-45 victory.
In UCLA`s five NCAA Tournament games, he`s averaging 11.8 points and 8.0 rebounds.
In the five years since he took up basketball, he`s come a long way. First he had to learn the rules. Then he applied what can`t be taught — dogged effort.
"When you get committed," he says, "nothing can stop you."
It would be nice if his family were in the RCA Dome to witness that commitment. But the way Mbah a Moute plays, there will be many more opportunities to see him play ball.
