Colourful Start of University Games (26.04.2004)
Students from some 13 institutions of higher learning are participating in the seventh edition of the University games.
The Soa campus of the University of Yaounde II, will for the next seven days be the heart of Cameroon’s institutions of higher learning. The institution is hosting the University Games for the first time; the seventh since the renaissance of the competition in 1998. According to the Minister of Higher Education, Prof Maurice Tchuente, who opened the event yesterday afternoon, Soa has been a dream come true for Higher Education authorities. Soa was the only State university that had not hosted the prestigious event for lack of infrastructure. The beautiful sports complex on which the opening ceremony took place was constructed in less than six months. It is therefore understandable why all orators at yesterday’s ceremony praised the construction firms for their prompt action. The assistant mayor of Soa could not hold back his joy. "Soa is very thankful for the sports infrastructure which will stay after the Games", he said, while requesting that the next edition be held in Soa. The Rector of the University of Yaounde II, Jean Tabi Manga, used the occasion to present the jewel which his institution now possesses: two football pitches, two handball courts which will serve also for lawn tennis, two basket ball courts and two volleyball pitches. The chairperson of the national bureau of university sports federation, Dr Dorothy Njuema, said : "what we are witnessing is a miracle". She told the athletes that the glory of sports is the joy of performing, but said the sky should be the limit for those who want to excel.
In his opening speech, the Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Maurice Tchuente,
instructed that the spirit of fair play should reign during the games. To him, the respect of ethics, and international standards are some of the major challenges of the games. "It will be an occasion for students to compete in a spirit of conviviality and respect of sports ethics", the Minister said.
The Soa Games will be the biggest ever since the reinstitution of the higher education sports bonanza in 1998. Some 1213 athletes from 13 institutions of higher learning (six State universities, Catholic University of Central Africa, National School of Administration and Magistracy, Post and Telecommunication School, School of Public Works, African Institute of Computer Studies, Higher School of Management and Institut Siantou, will be part of the sports jamboree. They will compete in nine disciplines: athletics (men and women), basketball (men and women), football (men), handball (men and women), judo (men and women), boxing (men), table tennis (men and women), lawn tennis (men and women) and volleyball (men and women), as well as in some exhibition sports like the handicap sports, Taekwondo and Karate.
Beyond the trophies that will be won and the accompanying merrymaking, the seventh university games, like the previous editions, will offer an occasion to intensify of the practice of sports in universities, promote and reinforce inter-university solidarity, animate the national sports scene as well as prepare students for university and international sports events.
Yesterday’s opening ceremony highlighted by a match past of the 13 delegations, the lighting of the Olympic flame was attended by several members of government, amongst them the newly appointed Minister of Youth and Sports, Sigfried Etame Masoma.
