European preview: Germany (11.08.2001)
BBC Sport Online`s Filippo Maria Ricci continues a regular series previewing the new season for African players in Europe`s major leagues by focusing on Germany`s Bundesliga
The German league made an early start on the last weekend of July, with Bayern Munich chasing a fourth consecutive title.
The last two have been won by Bayern`s rivals seemingly conspiring to hand them the title, and the Bavarians have not been complacent about their success.
Ghana`s Sammy Kuffour has played a big part in those three titles - plus May`s Champions League success - and Bayern were delighted to sign him to an extended contract, seeing off strong interest from Barcelona, Roma and Lazio.
Almost unnoticed amongst some big money arrivals and departures was the free transfer signing of Guinean defensive midfielder Pablo Thiam from Stuttgart.
At only 27, Thiam has played over 200 top flight matches and has been admired by Bayern for some time.
Agali joins Schalke
Most of the moves by the 38 Africans in the 18 first division teams have been within Germany, the biggest transfer being Nigeria`s impressive striker Victor Agali from Hansa Rostock to Schalke, who lost the title to Bayern in injury time on the final day.
Angolan Rui Marques left Hertha Berlin to join Stuttgart, while Munich 1860 got much-travelled Cameroonian striker Samuel Ipoua from second division side Mainz.
Ghana`s Hans Sarpei also moved up a division from Duisburg to Wolfsburg, where he will be captained by compatriot Charles Akonnor, only the second African after Tony Yeboah to captain a top-flight German side.
Nigerian striker Jonathan Akpoborie made the move down a division, leaving Wolfsburg for Saarbrucken, the club where he started his long career in Germany back in 1991.
Akpoborie was keen to leave after becoming upset at the lack of support Wolfsburg showed him when he was accused of being involved in the transport of child `slaves` on a ship he owned.
Freiburg`s African connection
Senegal defender Drame Diouf has also dropped down, going to Hannover from Werder Bremen, where he did not get a game last season.
The only arrival from abroad was Moroccan defender Ahmed Reda Madouni at Borussia Dortmund from French
side Montpellier.
Tunisia`s impressive midfielder Zoubeir Baya left Freiburg to join Turks Besiktas after four seasons at the club.
The Black Forest club still have five Africans on their books - two Tunisians in last season`s top scorer Adel Sellimi and loan returnee Mehdi Ben Slimane, Malian defensive pair Boubacar Diarra and Soumaila Coulibaly, and Ghanaian Ibrahim Tanko.
The latter is one of six Ghanaians in the top flight, but Nigeria have the largest contingent with seven.
Big stars such as Sunday Oliseh and Victor Ikpeba at Borussia Dortmund, and Agali, are complemented by promising younger players such as international centre-back Emeka Ifejiagwa (Wolfsburg), Pascal Ojigwe (Leverkusen), Adamu Yakubu (St Pauli) and Ade Ogungbure (Nuremburg).
Bundesliga 2
There are another 31 Africans in the second division, with Akpoborie the biggest name, especially now that Nii Lamptey has left Greuther Furth for China following a season seemingly glued to the bench.
Only one African arrived from outside Germany, as Cameroonian forward Ferdinand Chifon joined promoted Union Berlin from Polish side Pogon Szczecin.
Chifon and young Nigerian midfielder Chibuike Okeke also have Uefa Cup competition to look forward to as Union, then a third division side, reached the Cup final and lost to Schalke, who were already in the Champions League.
Other moves include Ghanaian Anthony Tieku going from Saarbrucken to Oberhausen and Nigerian Gabriel Melkam from Wattenscheid to Karlsruhe.
Nigeria`s seven
The most represented country is again Nigeria, with seven players, four of them at Saarbrucken in Akpoborie, Sambo Choji, Adiele Echendu and Stephen Musa.
Choji netted 16 goals last season, and is going to form a deadly partnership with Akpoborie, who has scored over 100 goals in his ten season in Germany.
The most African team is Hannover, who field Senegalese Drame Diouf and Boubacar N`Diaye, Malian Salif Keita, Moroccan Mourad Bounoua and Tunisia`s Fahed Dermech.
Best striker in the second division last season was Cameroon`s Olivier Djappa, who topped the charts with 18 goals, but at 31 his chance of a big move seems to have gone and he has stayed with Reutlingen.
