Lions Bundled Out of the Olympics (29.03.2004)
The Malian Eagles beat the Lions 1 - 0 in Bamako yesterday to grab the lone qualification ticket of Group B.
The Under-23 Lions of Cameroon will not be present at the 2004 Olympic Games to defend the gold medal which they won in Sydney in 2000. The Malian Eagles beat them 1 - 0 in Bamako yesterday to grab the lone qualification ticket of Group B. The match at the Modibo Keita stadium was crucial as the gates of Athens were still open for both teams that were playing their sixth and last qualification match for the prestigious Olympic Games in Athens. The Lions needed just a draw to sail through, while the Malian Eagles needed a win. But Captain Abada Fish and his mates failed to make Cameroonians smile. They succumbed to the pressure mounted by the Malian side.
It was a determined Malian team, made up mostly of professionals playing in Europe, that took on the Lions yesterday. The squad had nothing in common with the team that the Lions thrashed 2-0 during the away leg in Yaounde. Coach, Cheick Oumar Koné’s boys entered the game with much vigour and determination. This paid off as barely seven minutes into the first half, Dramane Traoré sent the ball into
goal keeper Carlos Kameni’s net for Mali I Cameroon O. All efforts to draw level by Cameroon failed as the Eagles kept on mounting pressure on the Lions and missing several scoring opportunities. Mali could have increased the goal tally at the 41st minute had they properly negotiated a penalty kick.
The second half was more or less similar to the first with Mali dominating. Cameroon lacked steam at the attack. One could hardly feel the input of professionals such as Valery Mezague (Montpellier, France) called up to revamp the squad after the humiliating performance of March 13th 2004 in Yaounde. Then, the team lost a golden opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games when it was held to a one all tie by the Democratic Republic of Congo, hitherto considered the "underdogs" of the group. Yesterday, the trail of mediocrity continued as Cameroon suffered its first defeat after six matches of the qualifiers; a defeat that was too heavy to bear as it cost the country a place in Athens.
Mali thus finishes first in Group B with 12 points. Cameroon trails behind with 11 points and is followed by Côte d’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
