Canon confirm Champions League exit (06.10.2003)

Caf Champions League Group B leaders, Esperience Tunis forced Canon Yaounde to a one all draw in Douala and confirmed their position, while Canon took an exit, though there is still a game to go.
Not much was expected from the game, but Canon had their pride to defend. So a meagre crowd of about a thousand began the game, before another 500 joined them. Canon started off with sufficient pressing on their opponents defence. After only three minutes, Parfait Ngon was firing at goalkeeper Tizie Jean Jacques. Few minutes later his head went over the cross bar.
But it was in the nineth minute that striker Francis Oumar headed in a free kick lifted in by skipper Luc Bessala.
With little pressure on their neck, Esperance players took it easy, stretching only when necessary. The tactics paid off at the 31st minute. Abandoned at the left side, Melki Mourad beat goalkeeper Dominique Emane for the equaliser.
Though there was no goal in the second half, there was more interesting actions for the fans than in the first half. Oumar was substituted by Mba Jama as Canon fired on all cylinders to make the difference.
As Canon threw themselves with
attacking gusto, Esperance waited for the counter attack, and took delight in simply spoiling the moves of Canon. The heavy pitch due to the heavy down pour also contributed to frustrate beautiful game. At the same time it was a source of excitment to the fans because players could miss stupidly.
While Emane saved twice, his mates threw away the chances up front. Emane was out of his box several times to galvinise the others to no avail. Coach Pierre Ndjili threw in Gilbert Momo with ten minutes left, yet there was no change. Both sides recorded their misses to agree with fate that Canon will not qualify for the semi finals.
Momo remarked that it was unbelievable for Canon to finish that way, ´because we have a good team´."We simply could not manage the competition", he added.
Coach Pierre Ndjili blamed the poor pitch and referee for the draw, excepting his boys from any poor game.
Canon are last but one in the group, though with a similar four points like AS Aviacoa Angola. Both teams will meet in Luanda on 18 October just to see who really finish last.
USM Alger defeated Aviacao 2-0 in the other day five game to earn 9 points. They stand second behind Esperance who cpount 11 points.
